The Age of Discovery

Adventure Memoir

By Christopher Oleata

Part III
An arrow shot at infinity will hit the target many times.

The Age of Discovery, Adventure Memoir, explores seven years of adventures by me, Christopher Oleata in 4 chapters and 49 continuous yet independent stories.

The story starts in 1969, in La Jolla California, living a dream of life near the sea. Travel is alive and encouraged in my family with dream trips arriving in stages. The 1976 road trip from San Diego to Quebec for the Summer Olympics is a major turning point because it was a whole month and I saw so much. We take camping trips in the Hawaiian Islands, the Sierra Nevada and at age sixteen a whole month in Spain. There is a clear understanding of a great world out there and it should be seen, experienced

It was on that trip to Montreal when I met a great friend, we were six. Woods Wheatcroft was his name and he lived just down the street. His family was visiting the Olympics and we made a connection. Upon return from that trip we began a friendship of a lifetime, a storybook friendship in a town of fortune and adventure.
The Age of Discovery traces many experiences of life like divorce, wilderness travel, journeys to Mount Everest and the Andes, the death of a family member, guided cultural tours in Peru, big wave surfing and the many twists and turns of life on a journey of discovery.

Travels mark the stages in our lives and give us time to reflect and prepare for the next step. Like a summer trip away from school and parents where one grows and experiences new things. So I look for these changes and work to bring travel into my life, for each step I take out into the unknown world to some new and distant place brings me closer and closer to the ever-elusive understanding of myself.
